Cape Town 'a green city of the future'

1 Oct 2008

A report from a New York-based think-tank has predicted that Cape Town could be one of the world's top ten sustainable cities by 2020.

The Ethisphere Institute's list of the global sustainability centres of the future also included Toronto, Singapore, London, New York, Frankfurt and Melbourne, BuaNews reports.

Alex Brigham, executive director of the organisation, said: 'In a world of increasing population pressures and depleting natural resources some cities, such as Cape Town, are proactively adjusting their practices today as well as implementing sustainable long-term practices.'

Moeketsi Mosola, chief executive of South African Tourism, congratulated Cape Town for its inclusion in the list and stressed the importance of sustainability in the travel industry.

'Sustainability is the way of the future and Cape Town is proudly leading that way,' he said. 'It is also, without doubt, one of the world's most beautiful cities.'

South Africa boasts a number of natural tourist attractions, including Cape Town's Table Mountain and the natural park that surrounds it, which stretches from Signal Hill in the north to Cape Point in the south.
