Light shows to come on in Iceland
2 Oct 2008
Holidaymakers planning visits to Iceland over the autumn and winter period will be able to witness two impressive light displays.
The first is a man-made exhibition the Imagine Peace Tower in Reykjavik, built to pay tribute to the late John Lennon, which will be switched on by Yoko Ono this month.
Based on Videy Island, the tower is inscribed with the words 'imagine peace' in 24 languages and emits a 20-metre-high beam of white light that is visible across the city.
Travellers can reach Videy Island on ferries from Reykjavik's Skarfabakki pier and can see the light from 9 October, John Lennon's birthday, to 8 December, the date of his death, as well as on New Year's Eve and during the first week of spring.
The other light show that visitors to Iceland can enjoy between October and March is the Northern Lights.
Owing to the country's proximity to the North Pole, this natural phenomenon is often visible on clear nights when temperatures are below zero degrees Celsius.
