New developments in Swedish tourism this winter

16 Oct 2008

Visit Sweden has announced that a number of developments are taking place this winter that are expected to boost the Scandinavian country's tourism industry.

People planning a trip to the popular ski resort of Are will have a wider range of accommodation options open to them, with a new design-led hotel, a hostel and a chalet all set to open during the 2008-09 season.

Another big occasion will be the opening of the Copperhill Mountain Lodge at the summit of Mount Forberget on 8 December.

The construction of the lodge is being overseen by architect Peter Bohlin, the man who designed Bill Gates' home, and will provide visitors with ski-in, ski-out facilities, as well as 112 rooms and suites.

Swedish Lapland's Icehotel could be anticipating more visitors this winter as it begins working with energy provider Gavle Energi to make the hotel carbon negative using wind energy, biofuel and solar power.

Adventurous visitors to Swedish Lapland will also be able to take part in a number of new excursions over the coming season, including racing in electric buggies, ice-fishing and ice-diving.
