Emirates opens Terminal 3

17 Oct 2008

This week saw the opening of Terminal 3 at Dubai international airport, the new home of the airline Emirates.

Opening in a phased operation, the facility's first flight was an Emirates service to Doha which was carrying 136 passengers.

The first passenger to check in on a first class service at the new terminal was Jamal Nasser Lootah, executive director for industrial affairs at the United Arab Emirates ministry of economy.

Mr Lootah said the terminal will be 'a pillar that contributes to the prosperity of Dubai'.

Emirates chairman and chief executive Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum said: 'Today our customers tasted the fruit of years of planning, investments and commitment.

'While we were quite confident of the robust systems and facilities, today was still a day of reckoning and we are delighted that our operations worked as planned.'

On the first day of operations for the new terminal, flights departed bound for Kuwait, Bahrain and Riyadh, while arriving aircraft came from Jeddah, Houston, New York, Sao Paulo and other destinations.

The second phase of the terminal's introduction, to begin shortly, will include flights to the rest of the Middle East and Africa, while Emirates' European services will come to Terminal 3 in the third opening phase.
