Sita finds high use of web check-in at Mumbai
17 Oct 2008
Sita, a provider of IT solutions to airlines and airports, has conducted a survey at six major airports across five continents and recorded the highest use of web check-in services at India's Mumbai international airport.
The study took an in-depth look at the travel habits of some of the 232m annual passengers who use six of the world's busiest hubs Mumbai international; Hartsfield-Jackson, Atlanta; Charles de Gaulle, Paris; Moscow Domodedovo; Sao Paulo Guarulhos and OR Tambo international in Johannesburg.
It was found that 19% of passengers used web check-in at Mumbai international, compared to 18% at Hartsfield-Jackson airport in Atlanta.
Mumbai was found to have the second highest rate of self-service check-in, at 29%, compared to 30% at Paris Charles de Gaulle.
Nearly three quarters (73%) of passengers at Atlanta booked their trips online, compared to almost two-thirds (62%) of respondents at Mumbai international.
Maneesh Jaikrishna, Sita's director for India and south Asia, said: 'This survey confirms that self-service is here to stay with potential for truly explosive growth in emerging markets.
'It is remarkable that despite low internet penetration in India, already almost 20% of passengers at the country's largest airport, Mumbai international, are using the web to check in.'
The survey also found that, for passengers in Mumbai, the main considerations when making their travel arrangements were price, flight schedule, airline reputation and ability to book online.
