Qantas launches inaugural A380 service
20 Oct 2008
Qantas has announced that it made history today (20 October) by launching the first commercial Airbus A380 flight between Australia and the west coast of America.
The airline's inaugural A380 service left Melbourne at 11:15 local time on a journey to Los Angeles, where it will be met by Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and celebrities John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.
Geoff Dixon, the chief executive officer of Qantas, said the service was representative of the airline's commitment to the transpacific market.
'We have operated air services between Australia and the United States since 1954 and have invested significantly over our 54 years of operation to develop these routes,' he added.
'Today, we offer 47 services a week to the US, plus daily extensions to New York. In fact, we offer more services to the USA than any other international market with the exception of New Zealand.'
The Melbourne-Los Angeles service will be followed by an A380 flight between Sydney and Los Angeles on 24 October. Flights to London, via Singapore, will be launched in January 2009.
Qantas' superjumbo is equipped with 450 seats spread across four cabins first class, business class, premium economy and economy.
