Sydney wins second 2008 travel award

20 Oct 2008

Sydney has been named the favourite overseas city for British holidaymakers in the 2008 Observer and Guardian Travel Awards, following on from the top honour it received in this year's Conde Nast Traveller Readers' Choice Awards.

Sydney moved up from the second place that it has occupied for the past four years to take top spot, while the Polish city of Krakow jumped from tenth last year to second position.

Some 17,000 Guardian and Observer readers took part in this year's awards survey, which saw Switzerland voted the top European country.

Sweden and Croatia took second and third places respectively in this category, while New Zealand was named the favourite long-haul country, followed by Peru, Cambodia and Japan.

British travellers' favourite overseas tourist attraction is Machu Picchu in Peru, according to the poll, which took top place ahead of Australia's Great Barrier Reef and Iguazu Falls in Brazil.

Closer to home, readers voted for Edinburgh as their top UK city and London's Victoria and Albert Museum as their favourite UK tourist attraction.

Singapore Airlines took the best long-haul airline award for the fifth year in a row, while Eurostar was named the best train company and Celebrity Cruises picked up the best cruise line accolade.
