UNWTO confident on tourism

20 Oct 2008

The UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has confidence that the travel industry will stay strong despite the global financial crisis, according to reports.

Francesco Frangialli, the organisation's secretary general, said that people are still travelling despite the fact that the credit crunch has led to consumers cutting their leisure spending, Reuters reports.

He told members of the United Federation of Travel Agents' Associations that the UNWTO is 'worried' but 'not giving in to panic'.

'Experience teaches us that tourism is resilient,' Mr Frangialli added. 'The need to go on trips, to take holidays, is too strong in our post-industrial societies.'

The secretary general pointed out that American and European consumers have been spending less on their holidays, cutting down unnecessary expenditure on restaurants, entertainment and other areas.

A meeting of the UNWTO in Madrid recently agreed to create a 'resilience committee' that will support the organisation's members with economic analysis and methods of response to difficult conditions.
