Gatwick hosts NFL stars
22 Oct 2008
London Gatwick airport played host to some unusual visitors this week when it welcomed two teams from America's National Football League (NFL).
The New Orleans Saints and the San Diego Chargers arrived at Gatwick in preparation for the NFL Bridgestone International Series game, which will be played at Wembley Stadium on 26 October.
Flights carried the sporting stars from Charlotte, North Carolina and Buffalo, New York and the players were quickly transported to their London hotels.
In October last year, London hosted the first regular season NFL match to be played outside the USA when the Miami Dolphins faced the New York Giants at Wembley.
David Stretch, BAA's customer service director, said: 'Following last year's visit by the NFL Miami Dolphins, we are delighted to welcome both teams playing the London game this year.
'Gatwick airport has a long and proud connection with many cities across North America and we are pleased to have been able to roll out the red carpet for the NFL again this year.'
The NFL currently consists of 32 teams from all over America which are divided evenly into two conferences of four divisions. At the end of a 12-week season, six teams from each conference take part in the playoffs, which culminate in the championship game known as the Super Bowl.
