Travellers have shown an increasing interest in mid and long-haul destinations this year, according to the latest figures from Opodo.co.uk.
By comparing bookings this year to figures from 2007, the online travel provider has compiled a list of the up-and-coming destinations for 2009, which is topped by Lima, the capital of Peru.
The South American city has seen a 98% rise in bookings this year, followed by Amman in Jordan (79%), Cairo in Egypt (76%), Seoul in South Korea (67%) and Varna in Bulgaria (67%).
Other destinations that are set to be popular next year include Rio de Janeiro, Abu Dhabi, Hong Kong and Orlando.
Caroline Noble, UK director at Opodo.co.uk, said: 'We're noticing a trend for our customers to invest their time and money into destinations that are a bit further away, but perhaps cheaper when they arrive.
'It's likely they are taking the strength of the euro as an opportunity to visit places in non-euro zones - destinations they might not have considered or have only dreamed of experiencing before.'
Opodo offers a number of holiday options that could prove popular in 2009, including city breaks in Amman, walking tours in Cairo and return flights from London Heathrow to Lima.
