Flybe picks up environmental award
24 Oct 2008
Regional airline Flybe has celebrated picking up the 2008 Brussels Airport Environmental Award, which is the second accolade recognising the carrier's green performance this year.
At the 2008 Budgie Awards last month, Flybe was given a 'special merit for commitment to the environment' honour.
The company picked up its latest award at a ceremony on 23 October, beating off competition from major rivals including British Airways, Lufthansa, Air Canada and Etihad.
Flybe's environmental initiatives include investment of $3bn (£1.9bn) in its aircraft fleet, which, by the end of 2009, will reportedly be one of the youngest and most fuel efficient in the world.
Mike Rutter, the airline's chief commercial officer, said: 'We're honoured to receive this award from Brussels airport that recognises Flybe's environmental credentials.
'Our $3bn investment into a dual type, state-of-the-art environmentally sensitive fleet and the launch of the world's first and only eco-label for the aviation industry, have both contributed to Flybe taking an industry lead and making a significant contribution in this area.'
Flybe claims to be the most successful regional airline in Europe, with more than 190 routes serving 13 countries.
