Emirates launches second A380

27 Oct 2008

Emirates took delivery of its second Airbus A380 at the end of last week, boosting the total number of wide-bodied aircraft in its passenger and cargo fleet to 122.

The new airliner joined the carrier's first A380 in commercial service today (27 October) after undergoing maintenance and safety checks over the weekend.

It is being used on Emirates' route between Dubai and New York, meaning that the airline is now able to offer daily flights between its domestic base and New York's John F Kennedy airport.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, chairman and chief executive of Emirates, said: 'Emirates has an environmental goal to operate the world's most eco-efficient fleet and our second A380's arrival will further reduce the airline's average fuel use per passenger.

'By 2013, the arrival of at least 100 new aircraft and the retirement of some older aircraft will see a further improvement in Emirates' overall fleet efficiency.'

Emirates recently launched phase two of the opening of its new terminal at Dubai international airport, which saw a number of flights to destinations in the Middle East and Africa moved to the new base.

Phase three will bring the airline's services to Europe to Dubai airport's Terminal 3, before flights to the Indian subcontinent, east Asia and Australasia are transferred in phase four.
