The first full moon of the New Year is reason to celebrate in China and one of the most spectacular festivals in the country takes place in early February.
Once the sun has gone down, thousands of lanterns light up the city for the annual Spring Lantern Festival in Hong Kong.
In Chinese tradition, lanterns protect people from the various spirits that can inhabit the physical world and guide them back to the land of the dead.
The festival has also come to be associated as a kind of east-Asian version of Valentine's Day, with young lovers coming out to celebrate their relationships and go on dates.
It is a tradition which celebrates good fortune, so anyone planning a city break to Hong Kong may want to go in early February to experience a light-hearted and fun side to the city.
