Dollar strength does not make US unaffordable

28 Oct 2008

The US has not become unaffordable because of the strength of the dollar, a leading expert has said.

Sean Tipton, spokesperson for The Travel Association, said that the likes of eating out and shopping were still cheaper in the US.

'Even with an unfavourable exchange rate it doesn't mean that it suddenly becomes a very expensive destination,' he said.

'The main expense is getting there. If you have reasonable flights available it is affordable.

'The strong dollar is not insignificant but it doesn't mean that the US has suddenly become unaffordable.'

Despite the increase in the dollar, figures from the Office for National Statistics show that visits to North America increased by 1% in the twelve months up to August 2008.

The dollar has risen in value by 29% against the pound since July 2008, with the rate hitting a five year low on 22 October.
