The takeover of
bmi by German carrier
Lufthansa has tempted
Virgin Atlantic to renew its interest in working with the company.
Chief executive of the company Steve Ridgway said that combining short-haul and long-haul flights with
bmi 'would make sense'.
He commented: 'There is now a major opportunity to do that and create a new and even more effective competitor to
British Airways.
'I am sure
Lufthansa realises the future opportunities and this could be a really good example of the right industry consolidation.
'It would be good for consumers, for UK plc and European aviation's competitiveness.'
He also praised Sir Michael Bishop, the founder of
bmi, calling him 'a considerable force in championing the cause of the consumer'.
Lufthansa already had a 30% share of
bmi, although it has now upped that figure by 50.1%, and it is thought that the company will bid for the remaining shares soon.
