Sri Lanka 'the future of sustainable tourism'

4 Nov 2008

Sri Lanka will be at the centre of the sustainable tourism industry in the future owing to its biological diversity and environmental initiatives, according to Sri Lanka Tourism.

The island's tourism authority will be involved in World Responsible Tourism Day on 12 November, which is being held as part of the World Travel Market at London's ExCel next week.

Sri Lanka Tourism launched the earth lung initiative in October 2007 and is attempting to become carbon neutral by 2018.

The project has reportedly been recognised by the UN World Tourism Organisation and the Pacific Asia Travel Association as having the potential to be launched in tourist destinations around the world.

Sri Lanka is known for its range of natural attributes, including its beaches, wildlife and locations to take part in watersports.

The island is home to leopards, elephants and 250 species of bird, many of which are found in its 13 national parks and 100 protected areas.
