Singapore 'planning for the future'

10 Nov 2008

The Singapore Tourism Board has announced that, following a highly successful year for the city-state's travel industry, it is now developing ambitious plans for the future.

Highlights in Singapore this year have included the first ever Formula One night race, the opening of a new terminal at Changi international airport and the launch of the world's tallest observation wheel, the Singapore Flyer.

Divya Panickar of the Singapore Tourism Board revealed that future developments will include the destination's first casinos, a Universal Studios theme park and resorts that will boast a range of leisure, retail and hotel facilities.

Ms Panickar added: 'Other lifestyle attractions visitors can look forward to by the end of 2010 are a new international cruise terminal and Gardens by the Bay across the mouth of the Singapore River.

'All these investments in the tourism sector will transform Singapore's landscape and help Singapore achieve its ambitious target of attracting 17m visitors by 2015.'

Singapore is becoming increasingly popular with European travellers, with a 3.2% increase in the number of UK visitors in September and further growth expected in the source markets of Russia, France, Spain and Italy.

Oliver Chong, the Singapore Tourism Board's regional director for Europe, said that travellers are beginning to see the city-state as a 'vibrant destination' with a lot to 'experience and savour'.
