Portugal 'an environmental world leader'
11 Nov 2008
Portugal is 'a world leader in environmental action', according to the country's national tourist office.
The organisation cites a recent poll by the Association of British Travel Agents which found that 83% of people consider it important that their holiday does not have an adverse affect on the environment.
Portugal has reportedly exceeded the EU's target of deriving 20% of its energy from green sources and is on track to gain 45% of its power from renewable sources by 2010.
The country is making use of its natural resources, with three of the world's biggest solar power plants currently under construction, including the largest of all in Moura, as well as Europe's biggest wind farm in the Minho Valley.
Dr Frederico Costa, vice president of Portugal's tourist office, said: 'With 220 days of sunshine a year and 800 kilometres of coastline, Portugal boasts some excellent natural advantages for the development of renewable energies.
'With holidaymakers becoming increasingly concerned about their environmental footprint, Portugal is an excellent destination for those looking for a "greener" holiday option.'
The UK is one of Portugal's most important tourism source markets, currently accounting for 19% of visitors to the country.
