New Zealand was named the overall winner and the leader of the 'best destination' category in this week's Responsible Tourism Awards.
This was the first year that New Zealand was nominated at the awards event, which was set up to recognise destinations and organisations that are using tourism to make a positive contribution to local cultures, economies and the environment.
George Hickton, chief executive of Tourism New Zealand, said the win acknowledges the country's efforts to maintain its '100% Pure' brand image.
The judges said: 'New Zealand is our overall winner for proving that it is possible to develop a national strategy which uses tourism to help make better places to live and to visit.'
Other winners at the Responsible Tourism Awards included Holland America Line, which was named the best cruise or ferry operator and praised for reducing dockside emissions by 20%.
The South Australian Tourism Commission picked up the award in the 'best conservation of endangered species or protected area' category, while the Bycyklen group of Copenhagen was recognised for making 2,000 bicycles available for free public use in the city.
