Holidaymakers planning visits to Rome can enhance their knowledge of the city's history by using a new Google Earth application that offers 3D views of the capital as it appeared in ancient times.
The 'ancient Rome 3D' gadget provides a virtual representation of the famous city as it stood in 320AD, when the Roman empire was at the height of its power.
Users can fly around the city using Google Earth's navigation tool, exploring more than 6,700 historic buildings and looking inside a number of ancient structures.
Future visitors to Rome can view a number of the attractions they are likely to see as they appeared thousands of years ago, including the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Arch of Constantine.
Gianni Alemanno, mayor of Rome, said: 'Our spectacular ancient remains continue to fascinate people all around the world, drawing millions of tourists to our city every year.
'We're delighted even more people all over the world can now enjoy the heritage of our great city. It's an incredible opportunity to share the stunning greatness of ancient Rome.'
Michael Jones, Google Earth's chief technology advocate, said the 3D application is the result of 'years of work' by historians, scholars and artists.
