Nantes to host major classical music event

17 Nov 2008

Classical music lovers will soon be booking their holidays to France to experience a major classical music festival entitled La Folle Journee de Nantes.

According to the Pays de la Loire tourist office, this festival – which will be held from 28 January to 1 February – is the largest classical music event in Europe.

Set to celebrate its 15th year in 2009, the festival will bring together more than 1,800 musicians and present some 270 concerts over the course of five days.

Every year, the event is themed around a particular classical era or composer. The theme for 2009 will be the composers of northern Germany from 1650 to 1750.

One of the pre-eminent composers of this era was Johann Sebastian Bach and visitors will be able to hear modern interpretations of Bach's music, two of which were written exclusively for La Folle Journee de Nantes.

Nantes is the capital of the Pays de la Loire region of France, which stretches from the Atlantic coast to the city of Le Mans and is intersected by the Loire river.
