Skiing in Japan 'cheap and accessible'

24 Nov 2008

Winter sports enthusiasts have been urged to try skiing in Japan, with the country's tourist office saying that the slopes are cheap and easily accessible.

The tourist board has released a guide to the 30 separate ski resorts that are located along Japan's 'mountainous backbone', including Hakuba Happo-one, which hosted the 1996 Winter Olympics in Nagano.

Other resorts include Niseko Grand Hirafu in Hokkaido, which has proved popular with Australian tourists, and Alts Bandai, which will host the FIS Freestyle World Championship next year.

Single-day lift tickets at resorts such as these are usually priced at around 4,000 yen (£28) which is reportedly cheaper than major skiing destinations in America or Europe.

People planning a skiing trip to Japan are encouraged to try out the country's hot springs, or onsen, which are described as 'the perfect way to ease tired muscles'.

The Asian country's transport system, and in particular the bullet train network, means that winter visitors can hit the slopes of Nagano and enjoy the nightlife of Tokyo in the same day.
