New York 'the ultimate city'

People planning a city break to do some shopping before Christmas have been urged to visit New York City.
In an emphatic endorsement of the famous metropolis, Lonely Planet travel editor Tom Hall said that, in many ways, New York is 'the ultimate city'.
'It's somewhere that goes beyond shopping, so it's great for three or four days, or even longer if you can spare it,' he added.
Commenting on Christmas shopping breaks in general, Mr Hall dismissed the idea that they are only for wealthy people, particularly when consumers can find a cheap holiday deal.
'There are often very good value deals available out there at the moment, both for flights and hotels,' the Lonely Planet editor said.
'I think if people are in a position to travel, this is actually a good time to do so. The closer you get to Christmas, the more expensive it will get.'
The Post Office recently released a report which showed that, despite the recent fall in the value of the pound against the dollar, shoppers can still save nearly 17% on popular Christmas gift items in New York compared to London.
