Tourism representatives from the Dominican Republic have celebrated the island being named the top golf destination in the Caribbean and Latin America region at a recent awards event in Spain.
Francisco Javier Garcia, minister of tourism for the Dominican Republic, said the award from the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) represented 'a real consolidation' of the development of golf on the island.
He added: 'At the moment we are developing courses of exceptional quality in the Dominican Republic. The new projects represent higher investment in 2009 than for the past four years.
'We will certainly use this award to continue working not only to be the number one golf destination for Latin America and the Caribbean, but to be the number one golf destination in the world.'
Another winner at the IAGTO event in Marbella was Dubai, which went from being voted the emerging golf destination of the year seven years ago to the leading golf destination in the Africa, Gulf states and Indian Ocean region.
New Zealand picked up the top accolade in the Asia and Australasia region this year, while Andalucia in Spain was handed the award for Europe's top golf destination.
South Carolina was voted the leading golf location in North America and Kenya was named the 'undiscovered golf destination of the year'.
