Colourful cows on their way to Madrid

5 Dec 2008

Tourists visiting the Spanish capital of Madrid in the first few months of 2009 may be treated to an unusual sight as the city plays host to the CowParade event.

This unusual occasion, which will take place in Madrid from 16 January to 21 March next year, will see fibreglass cows of various vibrant and colourful designs placed at different locations around the city.

CowParade is a public art exhibition that is intended to bring art into the community, rather than restrict it to the confines of a gallery or museum.

The idea for the event was dreamed up in 1998 by its artistic director Walter Knapp and the first official CowParade exhibition was held in Chicago in 1999.

Since then, the initiative has exploded onto the international stage and CowParade events have been held in cities as far and wide as Sydney, Tokyo, Johannesburg and Sao Paulo.

Each event sees local artists and designers decorate the cows in line with their own taste and style.

Tourists in Madrid are likely to be able to see colourful cows in city districts such as Salamanca, Retiro and Central.
