OR Tambo airport 'to see 3,000 hourly passengers in 2010'
10 Dec 2008
The 2010 World Cup in South Africa is expected to bring 3,000 hourly passengers through OR Tambo international airport's domestic terminal alone, it has been predicted.
Officials from the local organising committee (LOC) for the 2010 tournament said that the Johannesburg airport is likely to be running at full capacity during the event.
According to BuaNews, South Africa's government news portal, Cape Town international airport is also expected to be busy, with around 2,400 passengers per hour.
Smaller airports will also help to manage the influx. The under-construction La Mercy airport in KwaZulu-Natal is expected to handle more than 1,700 travellers every hour.
Skhumbuzo Macozoma, chief transport officer at the LOC, said that some 21.9bn rand (£1.5bn) has been invested in airport infrastructure to date in preparation for the World Cup.
LOC chief executive Danny Jordaan also commented on general progress ahead of the tournament, dismissing talk of a 'plan B' in case South Africa is not ready for the event.
'We must officially declare this idea of a plan B dead. All the stadiums will be completed, there is no doubt about that,' he said.
