London Luton 'top airport for passenger growth'

15 Dec 2008

London Luton airport has claimed that it is the UK's leading airport in terms of passenger growth.

The airport refers to figures from the Civil Aviation Authority showing that it handled 487,311 more passengers between January and September this year than in the same period of 2007 – an increase of 6.5%.

This growth is greater than the total population of Bedfordshire, the county in which Luton airport is located, or the population of the island of Malta.

A number of new routes have been launched this year to boost passenger figures at the south-east gateway, including connections to Cyprus, Italy, Poland and Jersey.

Glyn Jones, managing director of Luton airport, said: 'We have achieved this position due to our excellent transport links to London, the south-east and the Midlands as well as having one of the best airport catchment areas in the UK.

'This has been an encouraging year for us and shows just how attractive London Luton airport now is to airlines and travellers alike.'

In 2007, the airport handled close to 10m passengers, which represents an increase of nearly 400% over the course of ten years.
