Brits jetting off for the winter holidays
30 Dec 2008
Brits in search of some winter sun this New Year's are most likely to jet off to countries such as Tenerife, the Canary Islands and Egypt, experts say.
According to the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), Brits often choose to go abroad over the Christmas break, with destinations including the Caribbean and Mexico also being popular.
Frances Tuke, spokesperson for ABTA, said: "Christmas and New Year's are always big when it comes to people going away. People book them way in advance, they go away to see friends and family, they go away to get away from friends and family and they can also get free days.
"People expect this time of year to be quiet at work and people take that opportunity."
ABTA's figures show that more than two million people will be leaving the country through BAA airports, which include Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Southampton and the main Scottish airports.
