KLM looks forward to 90th birthday

2 Jan 2009

The year 2009 will be a significant one for the Dutch airline KLM, as it will celebrate its 90th birthday on 7 October.

This will reportedly make KLM the oldest airline in the world still operating under its original name, an achievement that will be marked by a number of special events throughout the year.

To get the year's celebrations underway, a special 'celebration flight' took place on 1 January which operated over the Netherlands' 12 provinces.

Peter Hartman, the airline's chief executive, said: 'KLM is proud of its Dutch heritage.

'This is why we're starting off our anniversary year with a celebration flight involving people from all the provinces of the Netherlands.'

The public were involved in the celebration through a photography contest, with KLM inviting people to take pictures of the flight from a recognisable point in the Netherlands and offering intercontinental flights as prizes.

Throughout the year, the airline will announce a number of new celebratory activities in the lead-up to its anniversary date.
