Cape Town Jazz Festival to have 10th outing this year

9 Jan 2009

The year 2009 will be a significant one for the Cape Town International Jazz Festival as it celebrates its tenth anniversary.

Scheduled to take place on 3 and 4 April this year, the event will include the usual variety of sounds and styles, from blues, soul and funk to Afro-pop, Latin jazz and hip-hop.

There will also be plenty of traditional jazz on offer at the 2009 festival, which will boast headliners including singer Dianne Reeves, jazz-funk star Maceo Parker and guitarist Peter White.

While it is today recognised as one of the most important events on the world music calendar, the Cape Town International Jazz Festival was not a guaranteed success when it first launched, according to SouthAfrica.info.

In 2000, when the first festival was held, many people believed that it would be a failure, like other attempts to host an international jazz event in Africa.

Subsequent years saw the cultural celebration go from strength to strength, however, to the point that it attracted more than 33,000 people and featured 40 acts in 2008.
