New York 'still great value'

16 Jan 2009

A trip to New York is still 'great value' for British travellers despite the fact that the pound has recently weakened against the US dollar, according to NYC & Company.

Jonathan Sloane, the tourist board's communications director, described the exchange rate phase that saw £1 equal to around $2 as a 'honeymoon period'.

Now, sterling has returned to its more traditional level against the dollar but this does not remove the opportunity for Brits to take advantage of excellent value for their money in New York, according to Mr Sloane.

'Visitors to the US have enjoyed a honeymoon period…at the $2 to £1 [exchange rate], making shopping, accommodation, eating out and more all seem at bargain prices,' he said.

'The rate is now back to the level that most people remember and a trip to NYC still remains great value, particularly in terms of shopping prices.'

A big factor in the favour of a trip to New York at the moment is low flight prices, with British Airways and Virgin Atlantic in the midst of a price war that has seen their fares fall as low as £258 for a return service.

Mr Sloane said that these are some of the lowest prices that he could remember for flights to New York from the UK.
