Emirates to launch A380 from Sydney to Auckland

30 Jan 2009

Sydney airport has looked forward to the forthcoming launch of Emirates A380 flights from the Australian destination to Auckland in New Zealand.

Emirates will launch the Airbus A380 from Sydney to Auckland on 2 February, representing the first use of the superjumbo on this route.

The connection to Auckland is Sydney airport's most popular non-domestic route, with more than 1.2m passengers using it in 2008, accounting for more than 11% of the hub's international passengers.

Russell Balding, chief executive of Sydney airport, said: 'The introduction of the A380 into commercial service across the Tasman is a great achievement, and I congratulate Emirates on flying the A380 on this very popular route.

'The fact that Emirates is acquiring 50 A380s means that while [this] historic flight represents a new first in aviation across the Tasman, there will be many more A380 flights from Sydney airport in the years ahead.'

Emirates is one of three carriers flying the A380 to and from Sydney, along with Qantas and Singapore Airlines.
