Glasgow pays tribute to Robert Burns

2 Feb 2009

The Mitchell Library in Glasgow will this year host an exhibition paying tribute to Robert Burns, the national poet of Scotland.

Entitled Inspired, the exhibition will be held between 4 April and 20 September as part of Scotland's Year of Homecoming – a series of events to mark the 250th anniversary of Burns' birth.

The exhibition will feature a mix of items relating to the great poet and contemporary works by artists including Tracey Emin, Douglas Gordon and Peter Howson.

It will also represent international art by displaying work created in Russia, the USA, Japan, Israel and other countries.

Baillie Liz Cameron, chair of Culture and Sport Glasgow, said: 'Inspired is bound to be one of the highlights of the Year of Homecoming.

'The mix of relics relating to Burns and the contemporary works should help give people a fresh insight into the man and his works.'

The Mitchell Library is home to one of the world's largest collections of material relating to the Scottish poet – consisting of more than 4,000 items – which visitors can see throughout the year.
