Grand Turk cruise port 'to see record passengers'
2 Feb 2009
The Grand Turk Cruise Centre (GTCC) in the Turks and Caicos Islands is set to host a record 500,000 passengers in 2009, it has been predicted.
If the Caribbean cruise port reaches the half-million passenger mark, it would represent a 25% increase on 2008 when the centre was temporarily closed following Hurricane Ike.
According to Carnival Cruise Lines, one of the key factors in Grand Turk's popularity is its range of excursion opportunities, which include horseback riding, kayaking, diving and fishing.
For people who want to set off on their own exploration of the island, a car rental office recently opened at the cruise centre.
Mike Reimers, general manager of the GTCC, said: 'The Grand Turk Cruise Centre is poised for a record-breaking year and we look forward to showcasing our island's magnificent beaches and diverse shoreside experiences to cruise-ship visitors.
'Additionally, the new on-site car rental agency provides GTCC guests with yet another option for experiencing and exploring the fascinating beauty of this island paradise.'
The GTCC can accommodate up to 6,000 passengers a day and boasts facilities including a 240-metre-long private beach, a swimming pool and a retail area.
