Long-haul destinations 'more accessible than ever'

2 Feb 2009

Consistent reductions in flight costs in recent years have made long-haul destinations more accessible than ever, according to the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta).

Long-haul travel destinations have been made more accessible by the consistent reductions in flight costs that have occurred in recent years, according to the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta).

Sean Tipton, a spokesman for the travel association, pointed out that the third most popular holiday country of all for British people is a long-haul destination – the USA.

He claimed that the popularity of countries such as America is linked to the fact that falling airfares have made them more accessible.

'The cost of flying has come down drastically in the last 40 years so it is actually affordable now to fly long-haul,' Mr Tipton said.

'It would not have been years ago, it was very expensive and only the very rich could afford to do so.'

The Abta spokesman went on to give the example of Florida, which sees about 1m British visitors every year owing to the fact that flights are not much more expensive than short-haul services.

According to a recent holiday costs report from the Post Office, Thailand will be the most affordable long-haul destination for British travellers this year, followed by South Africa and Malaysia.
