Record year for East Midlands

2 Feb 2009

East Midlands airport has announced that it experienced its busiest year on record in 2008 when it handled more than 5.6m passengers, representing an increase of 3.9% on the previous year.

The airport saw particularly strong growth in the first three quarters of 2008 as it was boosted by a number of new route launches.

Bmi, bmibaby and Manx2 are among the airlines launching new flights from East Midlands in 2008-09.

As the recession in the UK became more severe, there was a decline in passenger numbers in November and December, but this did not prevent the airport from breaking all previous annual traffic records.

Penny Coates, managing director of East Midlands, said: 'These figures are a great achievement for us and are evidence that the efforts we have made to improve the East Midlands airport experience for our customers have been successful.'

Ms Coates acknowledged that the economic situation is likely to impact passenger numbers this year, but said that the airport will 'remain committed to improving the customer experience'.
