New Seattle cruise terminal to open

3 Feb 2009

Visitors to Seattle will soon be able to set off on Alaska-bound cruises from a new terminal.

The two-berth Smith Cove facility is based in a two-storey, 143,000-square-foot building that boasts views of Puget Sound, Mt Rainier and the Olympic Mountains.

Smith Cove will officially open on 24 April when a Holland America Line vessel sails into Puget Sound, signalling the start of the 2009 cruise season.

The terminal will also provide a home port on the north Pacific coast of America for Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean International.

There are expected to be some environmental benefits from the new port, as its 1,200-foot berths are both equipped with shore power facilities that eliminate the need for vessels to run their diesel engines while they are docked.

In 2008, Seattle was the top departure point for Alaska cruises, with 210 vessels and a record 886,039 passengers.

The cruise sector is an important part of the local economy, contributing a total of $274m (£191m) in business revenue last year.
