Japan has won the award for the world's top country in the Wanderlust Travel Awards 2009.
The Asian country picked up the honour following years of competition between Namibia and New Zealand, which were ranked second and third respectively, followed by Bhutan, Syria and Peru.
Japan also enjoyed success in the 'top city' category as Wanderlust readers voted Kyoto into second place behind Antigua in Guatemala, with Boston, Krakow and Havana completing the top five.
Lyn Hughes, editor-in-chief of Wanderlust, said: 'I'm thrilled that Japan has topped the charts.
'I plan to go for my first visit next year and like our readers, I have long been intrigued by Japanese culture. I feel that there is so much to see there that we don't hear about in the UK.'
Singapore Changi was voted the world's top airport, followed by Paro in Bhutan and Hong Kong International, while
Singapore Airlines picked up the 'top major airline' accolade ahead of
Etihad Airways and
Air New Zealand.
One of the surprise winners this year was the West Highland Line linking Glasgow to Mallaig in Scotland, which triumphed in the newly introduced 'top rail journey' category.
