Record season at Manchester's Lowry

6 Feb 2009

The Lowry art and theatre venue in Manchester saw 271,000 visitors between September and December last year, meaning the period was the most successful autumn season on record at the centre.

December 2008 was the second busiest month ever recorded at the Lowry, with more than 102,000 people visiting the venue.

A substantial contribution to the success came from the Christmas musical The Wizard of Oz, which became the biggest box office hit the centre has ever seen.

With stage productions of Calendar Girls, High School Musical, West Side Story and others on the way over the coming months, spring and summer this year are expected to be just as successful.

Julia Fawcett, chief executive of the Manchester venue, said: 'It's excellent news that so many people have decided to visit the Lowry over the recent months and that they already have chosen to book for shows at our venue in 2009.

'People obviously still want to be entertained in the current climate; something I feel that our mix of theatre shows does very well.'

The Lowry was identified by Visit Manchester as the city's most popular attraction in 2008.
