Korea sees increasing UK visitor numbers
10 Feb 2009
The national tourist board of Korea has revealed that the Asian country saw a 'surge' in UK visitor numbers over the past two months.
There was a 14% year-on-year increase in the number of UK visitors to Korea in December 2008, followed by a 22% rise in tourists in the first two weeks of January this year.
According to the Korea Tourism Organisation, marketing initiatives launched in collaboration with partner airlines and tour operators fuelled the increase in visitor numbers.
Michael Michael, the organisation's marketing manager, said the rise in visitation from the UK was indicative of the fact that Seoul is becoming an increasingly popular stopover destination.
'Much of this increase is in stopover traffic so our strategy of positioning Seoul as a stopover destination not just for Australasia but also for cities in Asia, is showing benefits,' he said.
'Korea is also one of the few places in the world where the pound has retained its buying power against the local currency so this is a great time to visit and pick up some of those high-tech bargains that Korea is famous for.'
Korea could see a further increase in tourist numbers in April when it hosts the Lotus Lantern Festival, followed by the World Breakdancing Championships in May.
