Eurostar expecting 110,000 passengers this weekend
13 Feb 2009
High-speed rail operator Eurostar has revealed that it is expecting to carry more than 110,000 passengers on its services over the Valentine's Day weekend.
In order to get into the spirit of the occasion, the company will offer a 'high-speed dating service' on 14 February to students of the University of the Arts London.
Eurostar's passenger numbers are expected to be boosted by travellers with something other than romance on their minds as sports fans travel to Paris to see Scotland play France in a Six Nations rugby match.
Simon Montague, the rail operator's communications director, said: 'Passion for a beloved one or a fervour for sport is without doubt inspiring people to travel on Eurostar.
'We are also looking forward to high-speed dating on board our trains. We hope that the event will be a success and it will be interesting to see whether it could be a model which could be developed for other speed dating events on selected Eurostar trains in the future.'
Eurostar is laying on extra trains this weekend to cater for the higher demand for travel.
The additional services have been made possible by the completion of repair work on the Channel Tunnel, which was fully reopened to traffic on 9 February.
