European destinations prove popular from Birmingham

16 Feb 2009

Birmingham airport has released figures showing that it saw a 3.5% year-on-year increase in passengers flying to destinations in the EU in January.

The Spanish hotspots of Alicante, Malaga and Palma de Mallorca proved particularly popular, as did Grenoble in France and Geneva in Switzerland for winter sports holidaymakers.

In total, Birmingham airport handled 561,648 passengers through its two terminals in January, which chief executive Paul Kehoe confirmed was a 4.2% year-on-year increase for the 12-month period up to the end of the month.

He added: 'All the indications are that we are in for a challenging period ahead, with the airport not immune to the current pressures affecting the UK economy.

'However, with a growing portfolio of carriers and routes from Birmingham, and with a final decision regarding our proposed runway extension due in the coming weeks, there is still a lot to look forward to at Birmingham.'

Birmingham airport boosted its green credentials last month when SAS introduced the next-generation CRJ900 aircraft, which is the most fuel-efficient in its class, on its route from Birmingham to Copenhagen.
