Stansted to sell Oyster cards to tourists
17 Feb 2009
Transport for London and Stansted Express have announced a deal that will enable tourists to buy Oyster cards, which can be used on the capital's Underground and bus networks, at Stansted airport.
Travellers can now purchase a special Oyster card for visitors when they buy their Stansted Express ticket at the airport terminal or rail station.
Upon arrival at Tottenham Hale or Liverpool Street stations, tourists can change onto London Underground or bus services without having to queue for a ticket.
Each card will be pre-loaded with £10 travel credit, which can be topped up if necessary.
London mayor Boris Johnson said: 'We want to continue to attract visitors to the capital and are conscious of the welcome boost they provide to the economy during the current downturn. This deal will help us do that by making getting about that bit easier.'
Sally Chaterjee, interim chief executive of Visit London, added: 'London welcomes over 15 million international visitors each year. This deal will mean that visitors can leave Stansted knowing they have all they need to travel to London's many museums and galleries on London's world famous transport network.'
Visit London recently launched a promotional campaign that will be shown on television in Germany, France, Spain, Italy and Switzerland over the next 12 weeks.
