Giant solar energy system installed at Australian hotel
18 Feb 2009
InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has announced the installation of the largest building-mounted solar energy system in the southern hemisphere at its Crowne Plaza Alice Springs property in Australia.
The new solar photovoltaic system is part of a major IHG efficiency programme and is expected to reduce the hotel's energy consumption by between 40% and 80% depending on the time of year.
Other aspects of Crowne Plaza Alice Springs' energy-saving initiative include the replacement of more than 3,100 light bulbs with more efficient versions in all guest rooms, restaurants, foyers and meeting spaces.
New showerheads will also be installed in the hotel's rooms to improve the efficiency of water and gas usage.
Adam Glass, general manager of the hotel, said: 'We are located in one of the hottest parts of the country. This means on one hand that we are a large consumer of energy, but on the other, we have access to a ready renewable resource to significantly offset that consumption.
'The water and energy savings that will result from our plans are staggering.'
IHG boosted its presence in Australia in December last year when it opened InterContinental Melbourne The Rialto, following a major redevelopment of one of Melbourne's well-known heritage properties.
