New recycling facilities installed at Stansted
18 Feb 2009
Travellers catching flights from London Stansted can help the airport do its bit for the environment by using new recycling facilities that are being installed this week.
Passengers can make use of disposal units that are being installed at more than 30 locations throughout the airport's terminal buildings to recycle card, paper, plastic and cans.
Andy Sneddon, head of health and environment at Stansted, said that the new units allow airport users to 'play an active role' in the airport's recycling chain.
He added: 'These new terminal facilities are just one of a number of initiatives underway.
'We already compost waste on-site and have opened discussions with airline partners to look at how waste is collected during flight and how that could be fed into recycling chains.'
A target has been set at Stansted for 40% of airport waste to be recycled by the end of the year, which would be an improvement on the 34% that was reported in 2008.
Airport operator BAA recently joined a coalition with British Airways, Air FranceKLM, Cathay Pacific and Virgin Atlantic to call for aviation emissions to be included in a new global agreement on climate change.
