See one of 'nature's great events' in Canada

18 Feb 2009

Tourism British Columbia has encouraged travellers to visit Canada's Pacific coast to take in one of the sights featured in the BBC documentary Nature's Great Events.

The episode of the show being screened on 18 February will feature the salmon run that takes place in western Canada every year.

Hosted by David Attenborough, the programme will showcase Glendale Cove in Knight Inlet, which is home to one of the largest concentrations of grizzly bears in British Columbia.

These bears depend for their survival on the perennial return of millions of salmon from the Pacific Ocean to the mountain streams where they were born.

The event provides one of the world's prime grizzly bear-watching opportunities for people staying in the area at locations such as Knight Inlet Lodge.

Nature's Great Events began on 11 February with an episode looking at the summer melt of Arctic ice and the repercussions it has for wildlife.

A future instalment of the series will focus on the mass migration of more than 1m wildebeest and zebra from the plains of the Serengeti in Africa.
