Britons 'becoming short-term travellers'

19 Feb 2009

A trend of 'short-term travel' is emerging in the UK as a result of the economic downturn and increasing public anxiety over finances, according to insurance provider Essential Travel.

The company said that travellers are becoming increasingly reluctant to book their summer holiday far in advance but are aware of the fact that there will be last-minute bargains available online.

More people are therefore likely to 'book and travel at a moment's notice', according to the insurance provider.

Essential Travel backed up its claims with statistics showing that it has recently seen a 70% increase in customers booking last-minute, single-trip travel insurance.

Stuart Bensusan, head of insurance at the firm, said: 'Whereas in recent years people expected to book one, possibly two long holidays plus a couple of short breaks a year, "short-termism" is now the major factor influencing Brits' holiday choices.'

Online travel company Opodo.co.uk recently released bookings statistics which also suggested that travellers are reserving their short-haul trips much later this year as a result of the economic uncertainty.
