Lego pharaoh floats down the Thames

19 Feb 2009

The list of sights in London was boosted by an unusual spectacle this week when an Egyptian pharaoh made entirely of Lego floated down the Thames.

Traffic on the river made way for the giant model as it was transported to its new home at Legoland in Windsor, where it will be part of a new £3m attraction, the Metro reports.

Consisting of more than 200,000 bricks, weighing one tonne and standing at nearly five metres tall, the representation of the Egyptian king is thought to be one of the largest models ever built by Lego.

It is not the first ancient character to have proceeded along the Thames, however, as a model of Anubis, the Egyptian god of the dead, was transported on the river in 2007 to open an exhibition on Tutankhamun.

Guy Bagley, chief model maker at Legoland Windsor, said: 'We can't wait to get our pharaoh into the theme park. Without this final piece, we can't quite get the land finished and the park open in time.'

The park is set to open on 21 March this year with new attractions including an indoor ride entitled Laser Raiders.
