US Airways to reinstate free drinks

23 Feb 2009

US Airways is to reinstate its complimentary beverage service on its economy services next month.

From 1 March, passengers on US Airways and US Airways Express flights will be served free soda, juices, tea, water and coffee during their journey.

Beer, wine and cocktails will still be available, but at a price of $7 (£4.80).

This development marks a change to the airline's 'a la carte' business model, which was launched to allow customers to pay only for what they use inflight and removed the option of free drinks.

Doug Parker, chairman and chief executive of US Airways, said: 'We are firmly committed to the a la carte model and believe it's the right one for our business.

'It is also a work in progress – US Airways was the only large network carrier to charge for drinks and that put us at a disadvantage.'

The airline still expects to receive between $400m and $500m from sales of a la carte items this year.

From its hubs in Charlotte and Philadelphia, US Airways offers transatlantic flights to destinations including Paris, Frankfurt, Dublin and London.
