Abta: UK holidaymakers getting more adventurous

24 Feb 2009

Travellers from the UK are showing an increasing sense of adventurousness in their holiday choices this year, according to the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta).

Frances Tuke, a spokesperson for the travel association, said that many people are moving away from traditional hotspots in western Europe and going for mid- or long-haul destinations.

Ms Tuke pointed out that the majority of people will still visit Europe, but the fact that other destinations are not as established means their rise in popularity is more pronounced.

'The majority of people this summer, if they are going abroad, will still go to western European destinations,' she said.

'However, that market in traditional terms is seen as being mature and so it hasn't grown as fast as the mid- and long-haul destinations have.'

Abta expects a number of individual destinations to perform well this year, including Egypt, Tunisia and Mexico.

Opodo.co.uk recently revealed that it has seen an increase in bookings this year for long-haul destinations including Melbourne, Singapore, Johannesburg and Hong Kong.
